10 Hours One Way

Over the course of four years I completed a Bachelor of Art in theatre and dance through the university of wyoming, or more casually referred to as UDub. Ultimately, the reason I attended school there was that it was cheaper than staying in Montana. There were some definite pluses with attending UDub. Plus number 1, I was going to be given the guaranteed opportunity to perform as a freshman from a touring show that I auditioned for. Plus number 2, lots of outdoor stuff: hiking, biking, rock climbing, slacklinning, etc. another plus would have to be the calibre of the program. UDub has a very well thought out theatre and dance department that seemed to get better every year which was great from a student perspective. Downsides? There was one major con in choosing this school. Driving.

From Helena, MT to Laramie, WY, one way, is Ten Hours. That’s if your traveling in good weather with no delays. It was exciting the first time, kind of, and maybe the first time headed back home, but after that, no, not exciting. at least not then. Now I look back at all those hours I spent on I-90 and I-25 and wonder when the next time I will get to make that trip. When is the next time I will be able to just drive and drive and drive, listening to truckers jabbering away about politics, philosophy, the weather, and their rigs? When  is the next time I will get out at a gas station and have someone stare at my truck stuffed with all my earthly possessions and inquire about where I was going or where I was coming from? When is the next time I will see rolling hills oscillate like the ocean swells as thousands of antelope graze off the ever giving land. When is the next time I will get to lean myself into the wind and have it hold me there as if I were defying gravity? I never thought that I would miss those experiences. Never thought there would come a day that all I wanted to do was go back to Laramie and stand on the foot bridge, watching the trains go by and then, taking the few short steps into the local brewery, have a tumble wheat with who I now consider my best friends. I have so many wonderful memories from Wyoming and made my best friends while living in Laramie. Well worth the 10 hour drive.

This picture was taken on one of the first drives to Laramie. Truly amazing country.
