Moustache March 2010

March is roughly two-thirds through and my handlebar moustache is going strong. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the things I’ve learned so far from having this prominent facial feature attached to my upper lip.

  • I’ve re-learned how to drink out of different shaped mugs, glasses, and bottles, but there is no way to completly avoid the stache from getting a little bit of love from the drink being consumed, especially if it’s a drink with foam on the top (i.e. beer).
  • “Your moustache matches your bike quite well.” Yes, thank you. I do not consider myself a hipster and hope that people don’t classify me as such, but I’ve learned that there is a fairly strong connection to fixie riders and moustaches. I can thank @adelime, @expliKateD, and @JameeGreer for their explanations of this. However, I by my very nature have a very unique facial hair pattern in which I cannot change without the use of an excessive (and probably expensive) procedure.
  • If you ever wanted to know whether someone talks to a person or talks to what they’re wearing, grow a moustache.
  • On the other hand, I’ve made many new acquaintances and friends sporting the stache. It’s always a hit at the bars. Sometimes while I’m riding my bike people will randomly exclaim their approval of my moustache, which is never short of entertaining.
  • Hair product is an important detail to maintaining any handlebar moustache. I whipped up a homemade moustache wax for styling and I have to say that it is a necessity. Without it the stache will look disheveled all day long. The moustache (at least mine) will not maintain a spectacular shape without it.
  • Cosmo Brown had a handlebar moustache.
  • The Freedom Stache. I’ve realized that there are a fair number of guys who would like to have a moustache. If for nothing else, just to say that they tried, or had one once. For all the guys who have girlfriends who disapprove of the moustache and won’t allow you to have one, my moustache is for you.

Theses are just some of the things that have crossed my mind these past few weeks. I will update this with some more recent moustache pictures shortly.

Happy Moustache March.
